Tyeisha Chavis, Director of Continuing Education
Tyeisha Chavis is a seasoned educator, youth advocate, executive coach, and researcher in educational leadership, organizational change and administration, and culturally responsive education. Ms. Chavis chose to dedicate her professional life to addressing disparities in education by creating learning experiences for both children and adults that interrogate and promote educational equity in schools and youth based organizations. It is her conviction that examining individual and organizational beliefs, policies, and practices, will disrupt racial and other demographic differences in achievement, in order to improve outcomes for historically marginalized youth
Hailing from Harlem, New York, Ms. Chavis began her education career journey as a high school Special Education teacher and Instructional Specialist for grades 9-12 across core disciplines for the New York City Department of Education (DOE). Following her tenure as a secondary public school educator, Ms. Chavis went on to become an Assistant Principal and Interim Acting Principal at ROADS Charter High School, where she led the design, implementation, and evaluation processes for the development of research-based curricula, instruction, and quality assessments in core content areas. Seeing leadership development, coaching, and equity training as a critical part of improving student outcomes, Ms. Chavis moved on to prioritize longitudinal professional development of teaching professionals and school leaders in struggling high schools, as a Leadership Coach and Educational Equity Consultant across 38 New York City public schools, youth based organizations, and higher education institutions.
Ms. Chavis received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Columbia College, Columbia University, and is presently at Teachers College, Columbia University, working towards her doctoral degree in Education Leadership. She plans to continue her professional impact on change leadership in education by further researching and illuminating the experiences of Principals and their influence on creating equitable learning spaces that shape school improvement policies in K-12 education. Additionally, Ms. Chavis holds three Masters degrees, one from The City College of the City University of New York, and two from Teachers College, Columbia University. She currently resides in Bronx, NY and she is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a public service sorority.
