District 9 Team Member Spotlight

Sonja Fernandez, Executive Administrative Assistant

Sonja is a product of District 9 schools.

Her journey with the DOE began in 1997, when she started her career as a School Aide in District 79. Soon after, she became the Supervising School Aide, and continued to serve that community for 13 years.

In 2010, she transitioned to the role of Parent Coordinator in District 9, the district where she was a raised as a child. As a matter of fact, she was hired as Parent Coordinator at the same middle school she attended as an adolescent, and served that school community for 11 years.

Fast forward to 2021, she transitioned and is now the Executive Administrative Assistant at the District 9 office, a role she takes great pride in.

She has 2 amazing sons that are also products of District 9 schools, and is the daughter of a former District 9 educator.

Sonja hopes that her current role at the District 9 office will inspire other District 9 families to continue to pursue the betterment of themselves and to never give up on their hopes and dreams.
