District 9 Superintendent
From the Desk of Harry Sherman, District Superintendent
Greetings, District 9 family,
I hope this message finds you well. Spring and warmer weather have finally arrived, and we have many important and exciting events remaining on the calendar for the 2024-2025 school year. As we enter the homestretch, keep in mind that April through June is not just the season for end of year assessments and activities, but also for critical new learning and consolidation of skills.
I would like to highlight some of the wonderful things that have transpired in recent months. We had a District Literacy Fair at PS 132, schools have been creating opportunities for access with learning walks and family days, our elementary and middle schools participated in the spring debate tournaments, our Bocce league students were featured on WPIX 11, and JHS 22 and 323 held a successful first annual ASD awareness event. Coming up, we will be hosting the Bronx STEM Expo at Yankee stadium, PS 11 is hosting a mental health fair, and our student council representatives will lead a day of service for all schools in the district. This is just a small sampling of the tremendous community collaborations that ensure that every student in District 9 belongs, excels, and thrives.
Students will be participating in a range of end of year assessments in the next couple of months, including NYS ELA and Math exams, end of year screeners, NYSESLAT assessments, regent's tests, and others. While so much testing may be a lot for some students, the data allows us to ensure that we are providing the most appropriate instruction for your child. I encourage you to support your child's participation, and work with your school to ensure they are receiving the best environment to do their best.
Families are receiving their elementary, middle, and high school acceptance letters. Schools will be reaching out to ensure a smooth transition for you and your child. I strongly encourage you to follow up and participate in welcome events and orientations to build a strong connection with your new school.
As a reminder, summer rising applications are open now, and CEC elections are ongoing. You may participate in both through your Myschools account. Additionally, all students in grades K-3 have access to a college savings account that already has funds through NYC Rise, but families must confirm their participation to have access. If you need support with any of these items, you can contact your school's parent coordinator or school counselor. As always, the district is available to support you with any of the above matters at 718-579-7140. Thank you for all the ways you partner with us to make sure your child belongs, excels, and thrives!
Sincerely,
Harry Sherman, Superintendent
